Nina Schick is a leading speaker and expert on generative AI, renowned for her groundbreaking work at the intersection of technology, society and geopolitics.

As one of the first authors to publish a book on generative AI, she has emerged as a sought-after speaker helping global leaders, businesses, and institutions understand and adapt to this transformative moment.

We spoke to Nina to explore the future of AI-driven innovation, its ethical and political dimensions, and how organisations can lead in this rapidly evolving landscape.

In your view, how will generative AI redefine the foundational structures of business and economic productivity in the coming decade?

I believe generative AI is absolutely going to transform the entire economy as we know it. This moment feels quite similar to around 1993, when we were first being told to prepare for the Internet. Back then, some thirty years ago, we didn’t fully grasp, in our naivety, how profoundly the Internet would go on to reshape business and the broader global economy.

Now, we are witnessing something even more significant. You can think of generative AI as a kind of new combustion engine, but for all forms of human creative and intelligent activity. It’s a fundamental enabler. Every industry, every facet of productivity, will be impacted and ultimately transformed by generative AI. We’re already beginning to see those use cases emerge, and this is only the beginning.

As AI and data continue to evolve as forces shaping society, how do you see them redefining the political agenda and global power dynamics?

When you reflect on just how profound AI is in its capacity to reshape the entire framework of society, it becomes clear that this AI revolution is going to emerge as one of the most important political questions of our generation. Over the past 30 years, we’ve already seen how the information revolution — driven by the Internet, smartphones, and cloud computing — has become a defining geopolitical force.

Now, we’re layering the AI revolution on top of that, along with the data that fuels it, and the impact is nothing short of seismic. This will evolve into one of the most pressing and influential issues society must address over the coming decades. So, to answer the question directly — AI won’t just influence politics; it will, in many ways, become the very fabric of politics itself.

There’s been much discussion about the Metaverse and immersive tech — how do you see these experiences evolving, and what role do you believe AI will play in architecting this next frontier of digital interaction?

The Metaverse represents a vision for where the Internet may be heading — a future where digital experiences become far more immersive, intuitive, and experiential. It’s a concept that imagines how we might engage with digital content in a far more lifelike way.

But the really fascinating element here is that artificial intelligence is the key enabler — the actual vehicle — that will allow us to build and scale these kinds of immersive digital environments. So, even though the Metaverse remains largely an untested concept in terms of its final form, what is clear right now is that AI is going to be the engine that generates and populates the content that will live within these immersive spaces.

Considering the transformative power of AI and big data, what ethical imperatives must policymakers and society address to ensure equitable and responsible deployment?

The conversation around ethics, artificial intelligence, and big data is one that is set to become intensely political and highly consequential. It will likely remain a predominant issue for many years to come.

What we’re dealing with here is a technology so transformative that it has the potential to reshape the economy, redefine the labour market, and fundamentally alter the structure of society itself. That’s why the ethical questions — how to ensure this technology is applied in a fair, safe, and responsible manner — will be one of the defining political challenges of our time.

For business leaders navigating digital transformation, what mindset shifts are essential to meaningfully integrate AI into long-term strategy and operations?

For businesses aiming to digitally transform, especially in the era of artificial intelligence, it’s critical to first understand the conceptual paradigm shift we are currently undergoing. Once that foundational understanding is in place, it becomes much easier to explore and adopt AI technologies effectively.

If companies wish to remain competitive and gain a strategic edge, now is the time to start investigating how generative AI can be thoughtfully and effectively integrated into their business models. This includes identifying priority areas where AI can deliver long-term value — not just short-term.

If you put together a generative AI working group to look into this, your business will be transformed and able to compete with other businesses that are using AI to transform their processes.

As one of the earliest voices to articulate the societal implications of generative AI, what catalysed your foresight to explore this space before it entered the mainstream conversation?

My interest in AI didn’t come from a technical background. I’m not a techie. My experience has always been in analysing macro trends that shape society, geopolitics, and the wider world. That perspective is what led me to AI, as it quickly became clear that this technology would have far-reaching societal implications.

I began researching and writing about AI because I saw it as more than just a technological shift. Ultimately, this isn’t only a story about innovation. It’s a story about humanity. Generative AI, as an exponential technology built and directed by humans, is going to transform not just the way we work, but the way we live. It will even challenge our understanding of what it means to be human.

Salesforce has unveiled the findings of its UK AI Readiness Index, signalling the nation is in a position to spearhead the next wave of AI innovation, also known as agentic AI.

The report places the UK ahead of its G7 counterparts in terms of AI adoption but also underscores areas ripe for improvement, such as support for SMEs, fostering cross-sector partnerships, and investing in talent development.

Zahra Bahrololoumi CBE, UKI CEO at Salesforce, commented: “Agentic AI is revolutionising enterprise software by enabling humans and agents to collaborate seamlessly and drive customer success.

“The UK AI Readiness Index positively highlights that the UK has both the vision and infrastructure to be a powerhouse globally in AI, and lead the current third wave of agentic AI.”

UK AI adoption sets the stage for agentic revolution

The Index details how both the public and private sectors in the UK have embraced AI’s transformative potential. With a readiness score of 65.5, surpassing the G7 average of 61.2, the UK is establishing itself as a hub for large-scale AI projects, driven by a robust innovation culture and pragmatic regulatory approaches.

The government has played its part in maintaining a stable and secure environment for tech investment. Initiatives such as the AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park and risk-oriented AI legislation showcase Britain’s leadership on critical AI issues like transparency and privacy.

Business readiness is equally impressive, with UK industries scoring 52, well above the G7 average of 47.8. SMEs in the UK are increasingly prioritising AI adoption, further bolstering the nation’s stance in the international AI arena.

Adam Evans, EVP & GM of Salesforce AI Platform, is optimistic about the evolution of agentic AI. Evans foresees that, by 2025, these agents will become business-aware—expertly navigating industry-specific challenges to execute meaningful tasks and decisions.

Investments fuelling AI growth

Salesforce is committing $4 billion to the UK’s AI ecosystem over the next five years. Since establishing its UK AI Centre in London, Salesforce says it has engaged over 3,000 stakeholders in AI training and workshops.

Key investment focuses include creating a regulatory bridge between the EU’s rules-based approach and the more relaxed US approach, and ensuring SMEs have the resources to integrate AI. A strong emphasis also lies on enhancing digital skills and centralising training to support the AI workforce of the future.

Feryal Clark, Minister for AI and Digital Government, said: “These findings are further proof the UK is in prime position to take advantage of AI, and highlight our strength in spurring innovation, investment, and collaboration across the public and private sector.

“There is a global race for AI and we’ll be setting out plans for how the UK can use the technology to ramp-up adoption across the economy, kickstart growth, and build an AI sector which can scale and compete on the global stage.”

Antony Walker, Deputy CEO at techUK, added: “To build this progress, government and industry must collaborate to foster innovation, support SMEs, invest in skills, and ensure flexible regulation, cementing the UK’s leadership in the global AI economy.”

Agentic AI boosting UK business productivity

Capita, Secret Escapes, Heathrow, and Bionic are among the organisations that have adopted Salesforce’s Agentforce to boost their productivity.

Adolfo Hernandez, CEO of Capita, said: “We want to transform Capita’s recruitment process into a fast, seamless and autonomous experience that benefits candidates, our people, and our clients.

“With autonomous agents providing 24/7 support, our goal is to enable candidates to complete the entire recruitment journey within days as opposed to what has historically taken weeks.

Secret Escapes, a curator of luxury travel deals, finds autonomous agents crucial for personalising services to its 60 million European members.

Kate Donaghy, Head of Business Technology at Secret Escapes, added: “Agentforce uses our unified data to automate routine tasks like processing cancellations, updating booking information, or even answering common travel questions about luggage, flight information, and much more—freeing up our customer service agents to handle more complex and last-minute travel needs to better serve our members.”

The UK’s AI readiness is testament to the synergy between government, business, and academia. To maintain its leadership, the UK must sustain its focus on collaboration, skills development, and innovation.

Fiverr has released its seventh Business Trends Index, revealing a surge in demand for AI expertise.

The ongoing skills shortage is making it difficult for businesses to attract, and retain, tech industry talent. AI expertise is particularly in-demand.

Among the sectors that have seen the biggest increase on Fiverr’s platform include ‘Accounting and Finance’ services, which has seen an 835 percent increase over the past six months—showing a clear demand for AI and machine learning technologies that can help businesses streamline their financial processes and optimise operations.

The report also highlighted the growing trend for AI in creative industries, with AI art seeing a 6,223 percent increase in searches in the UK over the past six months. This suggests that businesses are increasingly exploring the use of AI technologies to create new and innovative products in the creative sector.

Bukki Adedapo, UK Country Manager at Fiverr, said:

“The services that are trending on the Fiverr platform are indicative of society’s rapidly increasing awareness and adoption of AI on a wider scale, following the launch of a number of generative AI tools to varied success.

What may be a little more surprising is the suggestion that UK businesses are actually being founded more now during a time of global economic turbulence than before. Having said this, often recessions and times of dramatic global shifts present new opportunities for businesses to prosper.

In the last 6 months, businesses and freelancers have certainly been tested, but we’re delighted that Fiverr is helping them to overcome the odds.”

Despite the economic challenges caused by the pandemic, a large number of businesses are still being founded in the UK.

Fiverr’s data suggests that there has been a significant uptick in Business Naming services (+51%) and Website Development (+92%) over the past six months, indicating that UK businesses are continuing to back themselves to thrive during the economic downturn.

Overall, the latest Business Trends Index shows that businesses and freelancers are adapting to the challenges of the pandemic, with many looking to technology to help them navigate the changing landscape.

The rise in demand for AI services highlights the growing recognition of the benefits that these technologies can offer, from automating mundane tasks to improving decision-making processes.

Alexia Pedersen, VP of EMEA at O’Reilly, commented:

“As the demand for jobs increases, so will the need for digital skills in order to meet the growing demand. However, our research shows that demand for digitally skilled workers in the UK is outgrowing the level of digital skills available.

To minimise the growing skills gap, organisations must invest in creating a highly skilled workforce to meet the growing availability of staff. At the same time, employees should prioritise L&D to make themselves an invaluable asset to their company – proactively identifying training opportunities with a quality L&D partner, particularly one that aligns with their unique learning style and objectives.

While there is no cookie-cutter approach to upskilling, individuals should be granted access to a range of learning opportunities as part of a defined path of individual development and wider organisational culture of personal development.”

As the world continues to evolve, businesses that are quick to embrace AI and other emerging technologies are likely to be best positioned for success in the years ahead.

Coffee farmers will receive some welcome assistance from AI on managing their crops amid tough conditions and growing demand.

European researchers from Capgemini have developed a platform called Project FARM (Financial and Agricultural Recommendation Models) which aims to boost farmers’ yield, optimise the value chain, and bolster the global food supply.

Project FARM is first going to be used in Kenya to assist coffee farmers. The platform was built in collaboration with East Africa-based social enterprise firm Agrics which provides local farmers with agricultural products and services on credit.

Julian van Velzen, a data analyst at Capgemini who leads Project FARM, said:

“By connecting farming communities with data science, and big data with traditional farming methods, the FARM platform is built to optimise the value chain and bring parties together as an ecosystem around one data-driven platform.

The platform can pave the way for bringing automated farming to small-scale farmers. With the increasing availability of open data and decreasing prices of sensors and satellite imagery, the future of farming is bright.”

AI is used to analyse farm data sourced from Agrics in addition to satellite data from Project Sobloo, a Copernicus Data and Information Access Service (DIAS).

A dashboard provides insights to the farmer with tailor-made advice on how to optimise production. This advice can also be sent via SMS so, for example, an alert can be issued to take precautions if a crop-damaging thunderstorm is due the next day.

On the business-side, Agrics is able to use the data to foresee any risks that may impact each farmer and their investment.

Violanda de Man, Innovation Manager at Agrics East Africa, commented:

“Through our interactions with the farmers, we are on top of a huge reservoir of data. We can now turn this data into meaningful insights, which allows us to provide time and location-specific products and services to increase yield and lower risk at farm and value chain level.

Increased value chain effectiveness will help to directly improve the income and food security of rural populations.”

The global demand for food is expected to increase by 60 percent by 2050 and most of the world’s population is fed primarily by small farmers in developing countries. Supporting these farmers isn’t just the moral thing to do; it also helps to keep food on all of our plates.

Earlier this week, Fairtrade warned that coffee could become a luxury due to climate change affecting production. According to Catherine David, head of commercial partnerships at Fairtrade, issues like extreme temperatures, increased humidity, and pests are hitting farmers’ crops.

Meanwhile, a growing population is living longer and the demand for coffee is increasing. Combined with the expected production issues, the quality of coffee is expected to decrease while prices rocket.

I don’t know about you, but I need my coffee and would rather not have to take out a loan for my fix.

Microsoft is launching AI courses to help business leaders understand how they can harness the technology and gain a competitive advantage.

Last week, AI News reported on a Microsoft study which highlighted that high-growth companies are over twice as likely to be using AI. 41 percent of high-growth companies are using AI compared to just 19 percent of low-growth.

This divide needs to change or small businesses risk falling even further behind. However, overall, less than two in 10 of even high-growth companies are integrating AI which presents a huge opportunity.

Microsoft is launching AI Business School which provides lectures, case studies, guides, talks, and resources from industry leaders as well as Microsoft’s own executives. The course is designed to be for people with a business background so it’s non-technical.

“There is a gap between what people want to do and the reality of what is going on in their organisations today, and the reality of whether their organisation is ready,” said Mitra Azizirad, corporate vice president for AI marketing at Microsoft.

“Developing a strategy for AI extends beyond the business issues,” she explained. “It goes all the way to the leadership, behaviours and capabilities required to instill an AI-ready culture in your organisation.”

The new ‘Business School’ is an extension of Microsoft’s existing ‘AI School’ which is a more technical course.

You can find out more about the AI Business School here.

A Microsoft survey of business leaders from various nations has found US firms are particularly slow to adopt AI technology.

One standout result of the study is that German, British, Russian, Dutch, Swiss, and Italian business leaders are – on the whole – reporting they’re “actively implementing” AI ahead of the US.

In fact, of business leaders from the countries surveyed, only France was behind the US.

The survey did not include all countries and is missing several notable countries including the likes of Japan, Canada, and Australia. Of course, the biggest omission is China.

China and the US are leaders in AI development but Microsoft’s study indicates that isn’t translating into adoption by American businesses.

Another interesting highlight in Microsoft’s study is the disparity in adoption between high and low growth companies.

High-growth companies, defined as having double-digit growth, are over twice as likely to be using AI. 41 percent of high-growth companies are using AI compared to just 19 percent of low-growth.

This disparity is most prominent in Germany where 67 percent of high-growth companies are using AI compared to just 17 percent of low-growth.

Susan Etlinger, Industry Analyst with the Altimeter Group, said:

“What’s striking about the research is the difference between double-digit growth companies and those with lower growth.

Double-digit growth companies are further along in their AI deployments, but also see a greater urgency in using more AI. They are looking at a one to three year timeframe – often really focused on the coming year. Lower growth companies are looking at more of a 5-year timeframe. What this says to me is that the more you know, the higher your sense of urgency is.”

Most of the businesses are either in the ‘exploring’ or ‘experimenting’ stages on their AI journey. The competitive advantages to using AI are clear, but it’s worth starting small and scaling up deployments over time.

On-demand transportation firm Uber is using artificial intelligence to determine whether a ride is for business or pleasure.

The company is using the data for a new feature called ‘Profile Recommendations’ whereby the app will recommend switching to a correct profile for your journey.

Many people will have two Uber profile – one for personal use, and the other for business.

Ronnie Gurion, GM and Global Head of Uber for Business, says:

“Using machine learning, Uber can predict which profile and corresponding payment method an employee should be using, and make the appropriate recommendation.”

When quickly booking a ride, it can be easy to forget to switch. Accidentally booking a ride home from a night out using a business account set up with a workplace’s payment details is an unwanted conversation with an employer.

Uber believes its success rate for determining the correct profile is around 80 percent.

To help reduce the 20 percent it gets wrong, businesses can assign ‘trip reviewers’ who know whether an employee’s use is supposed to be personal.

Any questionable rides can be flagged by the reviewer and the employee can decide in the app if it was supposed to be a personal ride or not. The whole process is designed to be much quicker than starting email threads about the issue and similar bureaucratic processes.

What are your thoughts on Uber’s use of AI for its latest feature? Let us know in the comments.
